Background
The New Civic Development for The Ottawa Hospital is well into the planning stages with the site selection completed and proposed design of the new cutting-edge campus that will be situated near Dow’s Lake at the foot of the Rideau Canal in Ottawa released to the public in Spring 2021. The New Civic is scheduled to open in 2028.
This public infrastructure development project has a budget of $2.8 Billion and is anticipated to create 20,000 jobs. As one of Ottawa’s largest infrastructure projects, the New Civic represents an important addition to the Ottawa community. The Ottawa Community Benefits Network believes that a Community Benefits Agreement is particularly relevant and aligns with the Hospital’s Mission that focuses on the needs of the community. There is also precedent of CBA’s for new healthcare facilities in Canada, most notably St. Paul’s hospital in Vancouver which has a comprehensive CBA, as well as Michael Garron Hospital and the West Park Healthcare Centre both in Toronto who have CBA’s of more limited scope.
Our Work
The Steering Committee of the Ottawa Community Benefits Network has authorized this development to be a key focus for the Network moving forward and preliminary efforts are underway to advocate for a Community Benefits Agreement for the New Civic development.
